We support Green Tourism

We designed our eco friendly holiday houses to be as green and ecologically conscious as possible. And we are proud to be part of Britain’s Green Tourism Business Scheme because it recognises our commitment to green issues and sustainability.

A month after opening Wallops Wood Cottages we won the Green Tourism Silver Award. Subsequently, we won the Gold Award in 2020 after working hard on sustainability at our eco friendly holiday houses. Our hope is that the number of environmental steps taken at our eco friendly holiday houses will make a difference. Nevertheless, we ensure the quality of our accommodation and service is always a priority.

We encourage guests to explore the surrounding countryside within the South Downs National Park. For this purpose we provide walking routes in the information packs of the eco friendly holiday houses. Take the laminated routes with you on your walks, or use them on your mobile device, to save paper!

Our Eco Friendly Holiday Houses

  • We installed solar panels to power the Wallops Wood Cottages site. Consequently, the solar panels power our woodchip boiler so that the cottages, indoor pool and games room can be heated.
  • Our woodland is sustainably managed and we source woodchips from a local co-operative.
  • We light the buildings with low energy lights and adhere to the rules of this Dark Skies Reserve by installing exterior lamps which point downwards, thus reducing light pollution.
  • For the purpose of replenishing the aquifer, we harvest rainwater via a soakaway.
  • We use distilled vinegar and Ecover products to clean our cottages, and we polish wooden surfaces with beeswax.
  • Discarded textiles are made into cleaning cloths, or donated to charities with textile recycling schemes.
  • We store and repurpose excess building materials for future building projects. As an illustration, we used timber from the build of the games room to create shop shelving, and the bicycle store.
  • We recycle kitchen brushes and scourers for our maintenance team to re-use them.
  • Our holiday houses have kitchen bins for both normal and green waste, as well as large recycling bins for paper/card, glass, aluminium and steel in the car park.
  • We collect discarded Nespresso coffee capsules and grounds which are recycled by Nespresso to make bicycles, and soil improvers.
  • Wallops Wood supports local artisans and producers of quality Hampshire fare.

We love our wildlife!

A host of wildlife live here and our guests love seeing the different species around the estate.

  • Owing to the owl boxes we placed around site, you can hear the owls hooting to each other at night.
  • Kites are often seen swirling high up in the thermals, making ‘figures of eight’ and cruising above our eco friendly holiday houses.
  • We sow a wild meadow with native flowers and grasses every year on the meadow, and a path is mown through it. Guests love to meander along the path to enjoy the wild flowers, and butterflies feasting there.
  • Watch the elusive South Downs Hares here at Wallops Wood. The best time to see them is during Spring and Summer.
  • Look carefully in the surrounding fields, woodland and lanes to see green finches, grey partridges, lapwings, goldfinches, and skylarks. Surprisingly our hedges are full of sparrows, common blackbirds, chiff-chaffs, blue tits, and yellowhammers.
  • And you may be lucky in glimpsing roe deer as they nibble shoots and leaves at dawn in your garden!
